Quote Response 2

"Good literature substitutes for experiences which we have not ourselves lived through" -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I think the what the speaker is trying to say is that good literature lets us read and imagine about stuff that we haven't done yet. When you read a book about adventure, we are able to imagine what it is like. This is how we substitute experiences that we haven't done ourselves.

This quote goes with my book because Dorothy is stuck in grey Kansas where her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry never laugh or have fun. She likes to be creative and imagine a world that's not so grey and boring. When she gets stuck in the land of Oz she is happy to be there because its bright and happy and full of laughter. All though she meets friends and is in a beautiful land she still wants to go home. By being in the land of Oz she now knows that there if a live of fun and laughter.

4 songs for my book

This week we have to pick atleast 4 songs that goes along with our book. Here are the 4 songs I picked =]

1) "Castle on a Cloud" by Les Miserables Cast. This song is sung in the musical Les Miserables by the little girl Cossette. Cossette wishes to be in the perfect castle on a cloud. She doesnt like living with her Inn family and doing there chores. This song goes with Dorothy because she lives in a grey little place and her Aunt and Uncle never seem to have fun and laugh. Dorothy wishes she could be in a place that isnt so grey.

2) "Yesterday" By The Beatles. This song a man who loses his girlfriend. This song goes with the Tin WoodMan because he was in love with a munchkin girl whose's mother didnt want her to marry him so she told the Wicked Witch of the East to get rid of him. The Wicked Witch cut the Tin WoodMans arms, legs, and head off but each time the Tin WoodMan got Tinman to make him a body. Finally the Wicked Witch of the East cut his chest and got rid of his heart. Now all the wants is a heart so he can love again.

3)"Palladio" by Karl Jenkins. This is an instrumental song. This song can be used when Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin WoodMan, and the Cowardly Lion are on there way to the Emerald City to see Oz because the woods they go through are described as scarey and they meet wierd creatures on the way. Also because the story is sort of about fighting between good and evil, Dorothy as Good and the Wicked Witch of the East as evil, and this song sounds like a battle between good and evil.

4) "Vesuvius" by Frank Ticheli. This is also an instrumental song. It is aboout when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the city of Pompeii. This song can be used when ever the twister comes and takes Dorothys house. You can hear how in the beginning of the song it starts of calm and then turns chaotic just like in the story it starts out calm then the family starts to freak out when the twister comes.

I finished my book =]

I finished my book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass. They were both very interesting stories to read, and im gald I was able to read them. I like how the author made the character Alice because she's a little girl trapped in wierd messed up worlds and she handles it very well.

I am now reading The Wizard of Oz. I am reading this because I've always loved the movie and thought that since I've already read two other stories about fantasy worlds I can just keep having fun reading about fantasy things. So far it seems like a fun book that I will enjoy reading.

Quote Response

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.” - C. S. Lewis

I think the speaker means literature plays a big role in our lives. The speaker is saying that literature makes our world interesting. When they say "Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it" they're saying that books and writing make our world what it is, not describe it.

I just finished Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. I am now reading the second story Through The Looking-Glass. This quote relates to both stories because each story is about over coming boredom. In the beginning of the story Alice is just sitting with her sister, bored. She see's the rabbit pull a watch out of his coat. By Alice over coming her boredom she goes down the hole. "It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides" fits best with my stories because it's saying that daily life needs literature, and in Alice in Wonderland daily live needs a purpose and creativity.

What about this book will challenge you and how will you deal with these challenges?

I dont think my book will challenge me too much. It can get confusing sometimes because the author switches characters alot. Also they way he as the main character talk is kind of strange too. I think I can deal with this easily by just paying attention more to whats going on, and by taking my time.

What book did I choose, and why did I choose it?

The book I picked for english was Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. I decided to read this because it seemed like a fun and interesting book to read. Its sounds different from other classic books. I normally read different books, so Alice in Wonderland seemed like a book I would enjoy.
